Jumna association was founded in 2011 right after the Revolution and the collapse of the ancient regime, It is composed of a group of progressive and leftist activists who created this association to organize the small farmers and peasants who used to work in the Oases of Jumna which is one of the best and most fertile dates fields in Tunisia. Jumna is a small town in the far south of Tunisia in the governorate of Kebilli 500 km from the capital Tunis. During the 1950’s and 1960’s these fertile lands were owned and exploited by Jumna farmers the original land owners, However, since the 1960’s the land were confiscated by the state to be then exploited in a form of Cooperatives run by the state which failed in the 1970’s then offered to big farmers and agricultural agribusinesses. The landowners became landless farmers and workers. In 2011 these farmers and their families seized the opportunity and occupied the land, this movement was strongly supported by million rural women association, civil society and revolutionary political leftist parties. The best idea then was to create this association to organize the work and actions of the farmers, the fight took a lot of forms Political, Legal and popular. Now the association is running the dates cooperative in a form of Solidarity and social economy.
